Mat3ra in Tsukuba: Visiting Sekisui Chemical and the University of Tsukuba CCS

A day in Tsukuba: the Mat3ra team visits Sekisui Chemical and the University of Tsukuba's Center for Computational Sciences, touring CCS's historic supercomputers and catching up on the MoU collaboration.

On September 29, 2026, the Mat3ra team spent the day in Tsukuba, Japan, visiting two long-standing partners: Sekisui Chemical and the Center for Computational Sciences (CCS) at the University of Tsukuba.

Sekisui Chemical

The day began with a visit to Sekisui Chemical, where the team was welcomed by Shimmei-san and colleagues for a conversation about materials research and potential areas of collaboration.

From there, the team headed to CCS at the University of Tsukuba, where Prof. Minoru Otani and Prof. Yasuteru Shigeta, CCS Director, hosted a tour of the center's computing facilities — including a look at CP-PACS, the parallel array supercomputer that was the fastest in the world in 1996, and its successor, PACS-CS.

The visit also included further conversations around the Memorandum of Understanding signed between Mat3ra and CCS, and the two-year framework for collaboration it lays out.
