Mat3ra and University of Tsukuba establish research partnership

Mat3ra Japan, K.K. signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Center for Computational Sciences (CCS) at the University of Tsukuba on September 29, 2026, giving CCS researchers free access to the Mat3ra platform and establishing a framework for training and collaboration across Japan's computational science community.

Mat3ra and University of Tsukuba's Center for Computational Sciences establish research partnership

On September 29, 2026, Mat3ra Japan, K.K. signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Center for Computational Sciences (CCS) at the University of Tsukuba, establishing a framework for collaboration on the use and dissemination of the Mat3ra computational materials platform within CCS and associated academic institutions.

Free platform access for research and education

Under the MoU, Mat3ra will provide CCS with free access to its computational materials platform for research and educational purposes, including relevant software modules, data storage, and computational resources for non-commercial academic use. In return, CCS will designate a Mat3ra-CCS Liaison to serve as the official interface between the two organizations.

A Liaison to coordinate training and outreach

The Liaison will coordinate training, onboarding, and day-to-day use of the Mat3ra platform within CCS, and may also act as a point of contact for other academic institutions across Japan interested in adopting Mat3ra. Mat3ra will provide the Liaison with comprehensive training covering technical use, user management, and workflow integration; once trained, the Liaison will run internal workshops and training sessions at CCS.

Connecting to a national computational science network

The collaboration also connects to a broader initiative: the Liaison may contribute to the wider dissemination of computational materials science infrastructure among universities, national research institutes, and industry in Japan through the Interdisciplinary Hub for Social Implementation of Computational Science in the AI Era, hosted by CCS under the MEXT Promotion of Development of a Joint Usage/Research System Project: Coalition of Universities for Research Excellence Program (CURE).

A two-year framework for collaboration

The MoU is structured as a two-year framework agreement and a non-binding statement of intent, giving the two organizations a foundation to build specific projects on. It is signed on behalf of Mat3ra by Dr. Timur Bazhirov, Representative Director, and on behalf of CCS by Prof. Yasuteru Shigeta, Director of the Center for Computational Sciences. Points of contact for the collaboration are Jean-Dominique Francois, Director, Business Development Lead, for Mat3ra, and Prof. Minoru Otani of CCS's Division of Quantum Condensed Matter Physics, for CCS.

Why it matters

Partnering with CCS gives Mat3ra a foothold within one of Japan's leading computational science research centers, and opens the door for Mat3ra's platform to reach researchers and students well beyond a single lab — extending the same closed-loop, AI-driven approach to materials science that Mat3ra has been building relationships around across Japan this year.
